Specifications of HMS Richmond, British Warship Currently Docked in Jakarta

Jakarta - The Royal Navy warship, His Majesty's Ship (HMS) Richmond is currently docked at Tanjung Priok Port, North Jakarta, from June 25 to July 1, 2025.


The arrival of HMS Richmond for the second time in Jakarta has a number of important missions. While docked, the warship will be the venue for a discussion forum for a number of British defense industries with the Indonesian Navy and officials from related institutions or agencies.

In general, HMS Richmond is 133 meters long with a width of 16.1 meters. The frigate-23 type warship is capable of reaching 14,000 kilometers at a speed of 28 kilometers per hour. Designed to defend and attack from all directions, this ship is armed with anti-water missiles, anti-ship missiles, and anti-submarine missiles.

HMS Richmond is also equipped with a boat capable of reaching a speed of 30 knots to deal with close-range threats such as inspecting and securing enemy ships in the middle of the sea.

In addition, HMS Richmond, which has sonar and an underwater combat system, also carries a Merlin Mark II helicopter. The attack helicopter is one of the forces in detecting and destroying enemy submarines.

Merlin Mark II can lower active sonar into the water or drop sonobuoys. Sonobuoys are small sonar devices that float in the water and can detect submarine sounds.

HMS Richmond has an Automatic Cannon Gun (ACG), a weapon that fires 30 mm caliber bullets. Then, they have a Heavy Machine Gun (HMG) a heavy weapon with a caliber of 12.7 mm and a General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG).

In addition, HMS Richmond is also armed with a 4.5 inch K Mod 1 caliber cannon. The weapon fires bullets weighing more than 30-36 kilograms.

As is known, HMS Richmond is part of the UK Carrier Strike Group (CSG), a multinational joint mission aimed at strengthening Britain's position as a strong leader in the global arena, deepening relations with allies and building new partnerships, ensuring British security both at home and abroad.

The warship is part of the Indo-Pacific mission alongside the Royal Navy's aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales and other allied warships. The CSG is the cornerstone of Britain's joint expeditionary force and a cornerstone of NATO and the global security alliance.

On Thursday, June 26, 2025, Indonesian Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin paid a visit to the British Royal Navy cruiser HMS Richmond, which anchored at Tanjung Priok Port in North Jakarta.

The purpose of the tour was to improve military cultural exchange and defense cooperation between Indonesia and the UK. Additionally, it promoted defense diplomacy by facilitating communication between both nations' stakeholders.

Minister Sjafrie was present when representatives from the United Kingdom, the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, and the Ministry of Defense signed a Letter of Intent (LoI).

The signing was also witnessed by Lord Coaker, the UK's Minister of State for Defence Diplomacy. Partnerships in education, training, and cooperative defense technology development are included by the pact.

Currently serving in the Indo-Pacific area, HMS Richmond is a member of the UK's Carrier Strike Group. Its existence demonstrates the UK's dedication to sustained defense cooperation in the region.

The UK's intention to strengthen its marine and defense ties with critical partners, such as Indonesia, is reflected in the visit. It also represents increased cooperation in tackling the challenges of regional security.

The collaboration aims to strengthen regional stability and increase communication. Both countries reiterated their dedication to upholding the peace and advancing maritime interests that benefit both parties.

The expansion of Indonesia-UK relations in a number of important areas, including prospects for more cooperation in military training and defense technology, was warmly received by the country's defense ministry.

Indonesia thinks that the warship's visit would strengthen ties between the two countries based on respect for one another's sovereignty. It is believed that defense diplomacy is essential to protecting national interests in the face of changing regional and international issues.
